This isn’t about the tech hitting some ceiling. It’s about money. And the way things are going, it’s not just the machines getting dumber—we are too.

Here’s the dirty secret: most people can’t tell the difference between a deep, reasoned response and a fast, confident-sounding guess. AI companies know this. So they throttle back the “thinking” to save compute. If a model can crank out 10x more answers on the same servers by cutting corners, margins skyrocket.

The thoughtful option didn’t survive. Not because it failed—but because it wasn’t profitable enough.

The Intellectual Backslide

The fallout isn’t just bad answers—it’s bad habits:

  • Critical thinking? Atrophying. Why wrestle with ideas when a chatbot will spit out something that sounds good?
  • Research skills? Rusting. Who needs sources when the bot gives you “synthesis”?

Sure, there are power users—researchers, devs, analysts—who know how to push these systems productively. But they’re the exception. The mainstream use case is quick, confident, shallow answers that make us feel smart while slowly making us dumb.

What We Could Demand

It doesn’t have to be this way. We could demand AI that:

  • States confidence levels
  • Admits uncertainty
  • Encourages us to think harder, not lazier

But that won’t happen unless users start pushing for it. Right now, the market rewards speed and polish over honesty and rigor.
